The meaning of ‘Bywyd’

Welsh noun: pronounced “BUH-wid”

English translation: life, existence, liveliness, zest, sustenance, reward, gift

“I chose the name Bywyd for three reasons.  

Firstly it reflects my Welsh heritage and my upbringing in North Wales, attending a bilingual secondary school. My Welsh language ‘skills’ are maintained through visits to family in South Wales and Welsh sport and drama on S4C.

Secondly it reflects the importance of people, life and vitality to all successful places.  And the importance of creating buildings, streets and spaces in which everyone feels welcome, and will enjoy spending time.

Thirdly it reflects how fortunate I feel to have been able to make living in such a stimulating and rewarding field of work. After more than three decades I am still excited by the anticipation of visiting a place for the first time, the challenge of understanding how it works, and the opportunity to learn from the people who live and work.”
